Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Suzuki Grand Vitara. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- If air bag diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If air bag diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to AIR BAG DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK .
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove and inspect AIR BAG fuse, located in fuse block below left side of instrument panel. If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is blown, go to step 6.
- Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Inspect SDM connector for proper connection. See Figure. If connector is properly secured, go to next step. If connector is not properly secured, repair as necessary. Go to step 8.
- Reinstall AIR BAG fuse. Disconnect driver-side and passenger-side air bag connector at base of steering column and behind glove box. See Figure & Figure . Install Driver/Passenger Air Bag Load Tool (09932-75010) to harness connectors. Disconnect SDM connector. See Figure. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between SDM connector terminal No. 17 and ground. See Figure. If voltage is more than one volt, go to next step. If voltage is one volt or less, an open or short to ground exists in Blue/Red wire to AIR BAG fuse. Replace wiring harness. Go to step 8.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove instrument cluster and disconnect 16-pin connector. Using a piece of paper, release shorting bar between SDM connector terminals No. 9 and 26. See Figure. Measure resistance between SDM connector terminal No. 9 and ground. If resistance is one k/ohms or more, replace SDM. See SENSING & DIAGNOSTIC MODULE (SDM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is less than one k/ohms, short to ground exists in Blue or Yellow/Green wire between SDM connector and instrument cluster connector. Replace wiring harness. Go to step 8.
- Replace AIR BAG fuse. Turn ignition switch to ON position and wait 10 seconds. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove and inspect AIR BAG fuse. If fuse is okay, reinstall fuse and go to step 8. If fuse is blown, go to next step.
- Disconnect SDM connector. See Figure. Replace AIR BAG fuse. Turn ignition switch to ON position and wait 10 seconds. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove and inspect AIR BAG fuse. If fuse is okay, replace SDM. See SENSING & DIAGNOSTIC MODULE (SDM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If fuse is blown, a short to ground exists in Blue/Red wire. Replace wiring harness and go to next step.
- Reconnect all air bag system components. Using scan tool, clear all DTC's. Go to AIR BAG DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK .
