Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Suzuki Grand Vitara. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Check for DTCs P0335 and P0340. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTCs are not set, go to next step. If either DTC is set, go to that test first.
  2. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If DTC P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305 or P0306 is set, go to next step. If DTCs P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305 and P0306 are not set, problem is intermittent. System is okay at this time. See INTERMITTENTS TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  3. Check fuel gauge. If fuel gauge indicates "E", add fuel and recheck. If fuel gauge does not indicate "E", go to next step.
  4. Check operation of secondary ignition system. See IGNITION CHECKS in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article. Repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If secondary ignition system components are okay and an secondary ignition system misfire is still present, replace ECM (PCM) and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If secondary ignition system is okay and secondary ignition system misfire is not present, go to next step.
  5. Check fuel injector circuit operation. See B-1: FUEL INJECTOR CIRCUIT INSPECTION in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article. Repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If fuel injector circuit is okay, go to next step.
  6. Using a mechanic's stethoscope, check each fuel injector for a clicking sound while engine is cranked or idling. If sound is not heard from all 6 injectors, go to the next step. If sound is heard from all 6 injectors, go to step  8 .
  7. Check resistance of suspect fuel injector(s). See INJECTOR RESISTANCE in SERVICE & ADJUSTMENT SPECIFICATIONS article. Replace injector(s) as necessary. See FUEL RAILS & INJECTORS in REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. If each injector resistance is okay and sound is still not heard from all 6 injectors, replace ECM (PCM) and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  8. Check fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article. Repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If fuel pressure is okay, go to next step.
  9. Check resistance of suspect fuel injector(s). See INJECTOR RESISTANCE in SERVICE & ADJUSTMENT SPECIFICATIONS article. Replace injector(s) as necessary. See FUEL RAILS & INJECTORS in REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. If each injector resistance is okay, go to next step.
  10. Check ignition timing. See IGNITION TIMING in ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS article. Adjust if necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If ignition timing is okay, go to next step.
  11. Check EGR system operation. See EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. Repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If EGR operation is okay, go to next step.
  12. Check fuel level sensor operation. See ENGINE SENSORS & SWITCHES in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. Repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If fuel level sensor is okay, go to next step.
  13. Check engine mechanical condition. See appropriate article in ENGINES. Repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If engine mechanical condition is okay, replace ECM (PCM) and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
