Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

  1. If engine system check has been performed, go to next step. If engine system check has not been performed, go to A4: ENGINE SYSTEM CHECK  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  2. Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Turn ignition off and on. Backprobing at ECM, measure voltage between ground and ECM 26-pin harness connector C21 terminal No. 4 (Blue/Orange wire). See Figure . Voltage reading should be 10 volts or more. Start engine and allow it to idle. Repeat voltage measurement. Voltage reading should be less than 1.9 volts. If readings are not as specified, go to next step. If readings are as specified, problem is probably intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect HO2S No. 1 4-pin harness connector. Check for poor terminal contact at HO2S No. 1 connector. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If no problem is found, go to next step.
  4. Measure resistance between HO2S No. 1 pigtail connector terminal No. 3 (Blue/Orange wire) and No. 4 (Black/White wire). Resistance should be 5-6.4 ohms at about 68°F (20°C). If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace HO2S No. 1. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM 26-pin connector C21. ECM is located under instrument panel, behind glove box. See Figure . Check for poor, loose, corroded or damaged terminal connections in HO2S No. 1 harness connector and ECM 16-pin connector C20. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If no problem is found, go to next step.
  6. Check for open or short to ground in Blue/Orange wire between HO2S No. 1 and ECM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If no problem is found, substitute a known good ECM, and repeat DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
