VITARA (2.0L), Grand VITARA (2.5L) & XL-7 (2.7L)

  1. Ensure transmission is in Neutral or Park. Set parking brake. Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Make sure all electrical loads except for ignition are switched off. Ensure idle speed is correct. See IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS  table under IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE.
  2. With ignition switch off, connect Suzuki scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under left side of instrument panel. See Figure . Restart engine and fix ignition timing by selecting FIXED SPARK mode. Set timing light to ignition harness for No. 1 cylinder and aim timing light at timing marks. Ignition timing should be 4-6 degrees BTDC. If timing is not as specified, go to next step.
  3. If ignition timing is not within specification, loosen CMP sensor bolts and turn CMP sensor until timing marks line up. See Figure . With engine idling, end FIXED SPARK MODE or disconnect jumper wire from test connector. Using timing light verify that there is a constant variation in timing within a few degrees of 12-16 degrees for Vitara (2.0L) & XL-7 (2.7L) and 11-15 degrees for Grand Vitara (2.5L), indicating proper operation of electronic timing system. Also, check that timing advances when increasing engine speed. If results are not satisfactory, check the following for proper operation:
    • Throttle Position Sensor
    • Test Switch Signal Circuit
    • Engine Control Module
    If problem is found, repair or replace as necessary. After repair, retest system.
