Pistons, Piston Rings, Connecting Rods & Cylinders Removal & Installation: Removal

- Disconnect negative (-) cable at battery.
- Drain engine oil.
- Drain coolant referring to COOLANT DRAINING .
- Remove cylinder heads. Refer to VALVES & CYLINDER HEADS REMOVAL & INSTALLATION .
- Remove oil pump. Refer to OIL PUMP REMOVAL & INSTALLATION .
- Mark cylinder number on all pistons, connecting rods and connecting rod caps.
- Remove rod bearing caps.
- Install guide hose (1) over threads of rod bolts. This prevents damage to bearing journal and rod bolt threads when removing connecting rod.
- Clean carbon from top of cylinder bore before removing piston from cylinder.
- Push piston and connecting rod assembly out through the top of cylinder bore.
