Cooling Fan Belt Tension Check & Adjustment
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Suzuki Vitara. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING:
Disconnect negative cable at battery before checking and adjusting belt tension.
- Inspect belt for cracks, cuts, deformation, wear and cleanliness. If it is necessary to replace belt. See COOLING FAN BELT REMOVAL & INSTALLATION .
- Check belt for tension. Belt is in proper tension when it deflects 5 to 7 mm (0.20 - 0.28 in.) under thumb pressure (about 10 kg or 22 lb).
- Cooling fan belt tension (as deflection / 10 kg (22 lbs)) "a": 5 - 7 mm (0.20 - 0.28 in.)
NOTE: When replacing belt with a new one, adjust belt tension to 4 - 5 mm (0.16 - 0.20 in.). - If belt is too tight or too loose, adjust it as follows:
- Loosen adjusting bolt (1) and pivot bolt (2).
- Tighten adjusting bolt (1) keeping fan belt in proper tension by tightening tension bolt (3) with wrench as shown in figure.
- Tighten adjusting bolt (1) and pivot bolt (2) to specified torque.
Tightening torque
- Cooling fan pulley adjusting bolt (a): 45 N.m (4.5 kg-m, 32.5 lb-ft)
- Cooling fan pulley pivot bolt (a): 45 N.m (4.5 kg-m, 32.5 lb-ft)
- Connect negative cable at battery terminal.
