Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect lower contact coil connector, located at base of steering column. Connect BASE OF COLUMN connector of Load Tool (09932-75010) to harness side of lower contact coil using Load Tool Adapter (09932-78340). Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, retrieve DTCs. If DTC B1021 is current, go to next step. If DTC B1021 is not current, go to step  3.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect SDM connector. See SENSING & DIAGNOSTIC MODULE (SDM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between SDM connector terminal No. 9 (Green wire) and No. 10 (Green/Red wire). See Figure. If resistance is 4.5 ohms or less, substitute a known-good SDM and retest system. If resistance is more than 4.5 ohms, repair open or high resistance in Green wire or Green/Red wire. See WIRE REPAIR .
  3. Disconnect load tool and reconnect lower contact coil connector. Remove driver-side air bag module. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect STEERING WHEEL connector of load tool to upper contact coil connector using Load Tool Adapter (09932-78310). Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, retrieve DTCs. If DTC B1021 is current, replace contact coil. See CONTACT COIL & COMBINATION SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If DTC B1021 is not current, replace driver-side air bag module.
  4. Reconnect all components. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Go to AIR BAG DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSTICS.
