Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Suzuki Grand Vitara. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Turn ignition off. Remove and inspect AIR BAG fuse, located in fuse box under left side of instrument panel. If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is not okay, go to step 5.
- Inspect SDM connector. See SENSING & DIAGNOSTIC MODULE (SDM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If SDM connector is connected properly to SDM, go to next step. If SDM connector is not connected properly to SDM, connect properly and go to step 4.
- Install AIR BAG fuse in fuse box. Disconnect lower contact coil connector, located near base of steering column. Disconnect passenger-side air bag module connector, located behind glove box. Disconnect SDM connector. Measure voltage between SDM connector terminal Pin No. 17 (Blue/Red wire) and ground. See Fig 1. If voltage is one volt or more, go to next step. If voltage is less than one volt, inspect Blue/Red wire between AIR BAG fuse and SDM connector for an open or short to ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . See WIRE REPAIR .
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) connector from rear of IPC. Release SDM connector shorting bar using a strip of paper. Measure resistance between SDM connector terminal No. 9 (Blue wire) and ground. If resistance is 1000 ohms or more, substitute a known-good SDM and retest system. If resistance is less than 1000 ohms, check shorting bars in air bag system connectors for a malfunction. If shorting bars are okay, inspect wire harness between SDM connector and IPC for a short to ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . See WIRE REPAIR .
- Replace AIR BAG fuse. Turn ignition on for 10 seconds. Turn ignition off. Inspect AIR BAG fuse. If fuse is okay, substitute known-good SDM and recheck system. If fuse is not okay, go to next step.
- Disconnect SDM connector. Replace air bag fuse. Turn ignition on for 10 seconds. Turn ignition off. Remove AIR BAG fuse. If AIR BAG fuse is okay, substitute known-good SDM and retest system. If AIR BAG fuse in not okay, inspect Blue/Red wire between SDM connector and AIR BAG fuse for a short to ground. See WIRE REPAIR . See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
