Esteem, Grand Vitara, Vitara & XL7

  1. Apply parking brake and block wheels. Ensure transmission shift lever is in Neutral position. Ensure neutral reference line is aligned with center line on manual valve shaft. See Figure or Figure . If neutral reference line and center line are aligned, transmission range switch does not need adjusting at this time.
  2. To adjust, remove shifter cable from transmission shift lever. Loosen transmission range switch retaining bolts. Rotate transmission range switch so neutral reference line aligns with center line on manual valve shaft. See Figure or Figure . Tighten transmission range switch retaining bolts. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  3. Ensure shift lever of transmission is in Neutral position. Install shifter cable joint to shift lever of transmission and adjust as necessary.
  4. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Place floor shifter in "R" position and ensure reverse lights are illuminated. Ensure vehicle starts with floor shifter in "P" or "N" positions only. Ensure vehicle will not start in any forward or reverse drive gear. With shifter in "P" and keys removed from ignition, ensure vehicle does not move and transmission is locked in PARK.
