Steering Wheel: Removal

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Turn steering wheel so front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove key from ignition switch. Remove AIR BAG fuse from air bag fuse holder located under instrument panel, left of steering column.
  2. On Esteem and Swift, remove 2 air bag module bolt access plugs. Disconnect horn connector. Release Yellow air bag module connector lock. On Grand Vitara, Vitara and XL7, disconnect horn connector from steering wheel.
  3. On all models, remove 2 bolts from each side of steering column for driver-side air bag inflator module. Disconnect Yellow air bag module connector from steering wheel. Remove steering wheel/shaft nut. Make reference marks on steering wheel hub and on steering shaft for installation. See Fig 1. Using Steering Wheel Puller (09944-36010 or 09944-36011), remove steering wheel from steering shaft. See Fig 2.
