Removal & Installation (Esteem & Swift)

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove key from ignition switch. Remove AIR BAG fuse from air bag fuse holder located in or near junction/fuse block.
2. Remove left steering column side cover. See Fig 1. Release connector lock from Yellow driver-side air bag module connector. Disconnect Yellow air bag module connector. Remove glove box and disconnect passenger side Yellow air bag module connector. If necessary, remove driver-side air bag inflator module and/or steering wheel.
3. Remove instrument panel knee bolster cover, knee bolster and inner knee bolster panel from below steering column. Remove steering column covers. Detach wiring harness supports from steering column. Disconnect ignition switch connectors. Disconnect contact coil and multifunction switch harness connectors from junction/fuse block. Lift carpet at base of steering column and remove steering column seal cover bolts. Remove steering shaft upper side bolt. See Fig 1.
4. Turn ignition switch in ACC position. On models equipped with A/T, remove shift interlock cable bracket screws. Disconnect shift interlock cable from ignition switch and steering column. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove key from ignition switch.
5. On all models, remove steering column mounting nuts/bolts. Remove steering column. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten nuts and bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
