Shift Solenoids & Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Solenoid

  1. Obtain access to PCM. See Figure . Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect PCM harness connector. Turn ignition on. On 1.6L, using a fused jumper wire, connect one end to PCM harness connector E172 terminal No. 4 (White wire). With other end, probe harness connector E173 terminals No. 15 (Green/Orange wire), No. 8 (Green/Red wire) and No. 16 (Green/Yellow wire), one at a time. On 1.8L, using a fused jumper wire, connect one end to PCM harness connector E172 terminal No. 25 (White wire). With other end, probe harness connector E174 terminals No. 6 (Green wire), No. 2 (Green/Yellow wire) and No. 13 (Green/Red wire), one at a time. On all models, ensure a "clicking" sound can be heard when battery voltage is applied. Replace appropriate solenoid if no sound is heard.
  2. To check solenoid seals, apply battery voltage to solenoid. Apply ATF to solenoid with battery voltage connected. See Fig 1 . ATF should pass through solenoid. Remove battery voltage. Ensure ATF does not pass through solenoid. Replace appropriate solenoid if defective.
