Wheel Bearing & Hub: Removal

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheel(s). On 2WD models, remove hub center cover. On 4WD models, remove free-wheeling hub or drive flange. See FREE-WHEELING HUB (4WD) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . On all models, remove caliper from steering knuckle and wire aside.
  2. Remove brake disc. If disc cannot be remove by hand, install (2) 8-mm bolts into threaded holes of disc. Alternately tighten bolts to remove rotor from hub. On vehicles equipped with wheel bearing lock plate, loosen 4 attaching screws. Remove lock nut using Socket (09951-16050). Remove lock washer.
  3. On vehicles not equipped with wheel bearing lock plate, remove spindle nut, anti-rotation spring and spring back-up plate from spindle by installing the spindle nut wrench (09943-06010) to the spindle nut and wheel hub. Use hub bolts and align the wrench with slots on the spindle nut.
  4. Tighten bolts to 22 INCH lbs. (2.5 N.m) and rotate the spindle nut wrench counterclockwise 2 turns to disengage anti-rotation spring from the spindle nut. Loosen nut and remove spindle nut, anti-rotation spring and spring back-up plate from spindle.
  5. On all models, remove wheel hub, bearing and seals as an assembly. If wheel hub cannot be removed by hand, use slide hammer and Hub Remover Adapter (09943-35511). Remove hub seal and snap ring from hub. Using Hub Bearing Installer/Remover (09944-68210), press bearing assembly from hub.
NOTE: DO NOT reuse bearing assembly once it has been pressed out of hub. Replace with NEW one-piece bearing assembly
