Wheel Bearing & Hub: Installation
- Ensure NEW bearing assembly is packed with high-temperature multipurpose disc brake bearing grease. (Most NEW bearing assemblies are of a sealed one-piece design). Using Hub Bearing Installer/Remover (09944-68210), press bearing assembly into hub.
- Install snap ring. Install NEW inner grease seal into hub using Hub Seal Installer (09944-66010) and Installer Handle (09924-74510). Lightly coat seal lip with multipurpose grease. Install outer dust seal to hub, DO NOT grease this seal.
- For vehicles equipped with wheel bearing lock plate, install wheel bearing washer, lock nut and lock plate as follows. Install wheel bearing washer. Tighten lock nut to specification while turning wheel hub by hand. Using lock plate, lock the bearing lock nut in position. If lock screw hole is not aligned with screw holes, turn nut in the direction of tightening until they align.
- For vehicles not equipped with wheel bearing lock plate, install spring back-up plate and anti-rotation spring as follows. Install spring back-up plate to spindle, aligning key of plate with slot in spindle. Install anti-rotation spring aligning key in spring with slot in spindle, and directing key side facing outward.
- For vehicles equipped with front sensor rotor, use pipe with 3.86-4.09" (98-104 mm) inner diameter to install as shown. See Fig 1. Avoid contact with rotor sensor teeth.
- Install spindle nut onto spindle and hand-tighten. Install spindle nut wrench and plate to spindle nut and wheel hub with hub bolts, aligning wrench with slots on spindle nut. Hand tighten bolts. While turning the wheel hub by hand, tighten spindle nut to specification.
- To complete hub-to-spindle shaft installation, reverse removal procedure. See WHEEL BEARINGS under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION . On 4WD models, install free-wheeling hub. See FREE-WHEELING HUB (4WD) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION .
