Trouble Codes

All air bag Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are read using flash code diagnostics. Flash code diagnostics can be enabled by connecting a jumper wire between air bag monitor coupler terminals with ignition switch ON, see Fig 1 , or by connecting a Tech 1 scan tester (with adapter and mass storage cartridge) to DLC and selecting proper function. See Fig 2 .

NOTE: It is not possible to read history codes or clear DTCs using on-board diagnostics. Tech-1 scan tool or equivalent is needed for these procedures.

Sensing and Diagnostic Module displays DTCs by flashing AIR BAG indicator. Each DTC displayed consists of a number of flashes which represent the first digit, a 0.5 seconds pause and then a number of flashes which represent the second digit of the DTC. Each DTC is flashed once before moving to next one. DTCs are displayed from lowest to highest number. After all DTCs have been displayed, entire sequence will be repeated until jumper wire is removed from DLC or appropriate command is entered into Tech 1.

DTCs are stored in EEPROM and cannot be cleared by disconnecting battery cable. Some DTCs are "Latched", and cannot be cleared. Latched codes require replacement of the Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) after proper diagnosis.
