Removal (Swift DOHC)

  1. Remove negative battery cable. Remove timing belt. See TIMING BELT article. Turn crankshaft timing belt sprocket in horizontal position, 180 degrees away from dipstick guide tube. See Fig 1 .
  2. Remove cylinder head cover. Remove distributor. Remove camshaft sprockets. Install a brass shank in camshaft hole to lock camshaft into position. Remove camshaft sprocket bolts. Remove camshaft sprockets.
  3. Remove camshaft bearing cap bolts in reverse order of tightening sequence. See Figure . Loosen bolts in 2 or 3 steps to prevent warpage. Remove camshaft. Valve lash adjusters can be lifted out of cylinder head (if necessary).
CAUTION: Valve lash adjusters cannot be disassembled or repaired. Do not apply force to adjuster body. If removed, keep immersed in container of clean engine oil.
