Engine Coolant Temperature Light Blinks In Red And Blue Alternately
Trouble causes :
- CAN communication failure
- Engine coolant temperature sensor malfunction
- Combination meter malfunction
- BASIC INSPECTION

Before performing the diagnosis, perform basic inspection. Ref. to COMBINATION METER (DIAGNOSTICS)>GENERAL DESCRIPTION>INSPECTION .
NOTE:- Check the battery and its installation condition.
- Check the related fuse.
- Visually check that the related connectors are properly connected.
Also, check the related ground terminal for looseness and corrosion.
Is the check result OK?
Yes : GO TO 2.
No : Repair the defective part.
- CHECK DTC
.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON.
- Read the DTC of [Engine] using the Subaru Select Monitor. Ref. to ENGINE (DIAGNOSTICS) (H4DO 2.0)>DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) . Ref. to ENGINE (DIAGNOSTICS) (H4DO 2.5)>DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) .
Is DTC P0117 or P0118 displayed? (Current code)
Yes : Perform the diagnosis for the displayed DTCs. Ref. to ENGINE (DIAGNOSTICS) (H4DO 2.0)>DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) . Ref. to ENGINE (DIAGNOSTICS) (H4DO 2.5)>DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC)>LIST .
After the repair, GO TO 5.
No : GO TO 3.
- CHECK DTC
.
- Start the engine.
- Using the Subaru Select Monitor, read all DTCs. Ref. to LAN SYSTEM (DIAGNOSTICS)>DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) .
Is DTC of U-code displayed? (Current code)
Yes : Perform the diagnosis according to the basic diagnostic procedure in LAN SYSTEM (DIAGNOSTICS). Ref. to LAN SYSTEM (DIAGNOSTICS)>BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE .
After the repair, GO TO 5.
No : GO TO 4.
- CHECK THE ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE LIGHT
.
Using the Subaru Select Monitor, check the following items in the [Active Test] of [Combination Meter]. Ref. to COMBINATION METER (DIAGNOSTICS)>ACTIVE TEST .
- Water temperature (HOT)
- Water temperature (COOL)
Do the indicated amount on Subaru Select Monitor and the engine coolant temperature light indication match?
Yes : Perform a unit inspection of the engine coolant temperature sensor. Ref. to FUEL INJECTION (FUEL SYSTEMS) (H4DO)>ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR>INSPECTION .
After the repair, GO TO 5.
No : Replace the combination meter. Ref. to INSTRUMENTATION/DRIVER INFO>COMBINATION METER .
After replacement, GO TO 5.
- CHECK REPAIR
.
Perform operation check to check if the trouble has been solved.
Is the check result OK?
Yes : Finish the diagnosis.
No : Perform the diagnosis according to the basic diagnostic procedure. Ref. to COMBINATION METER (DIAGNOSTICS)>BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE>PROCEDURE .
