Cold Air Does Not Come Out Even When The A/C Switch Is Pressed. Glass Cannot Be Defogged (Compressor Does Not Operate (Variable))

Trouble symptom: 

Compressor does not operate after turning the A/C switch to ON and the fan dial to between minimum - maximum.

Trouble causes: 

Compressor failure

Wiring diagram: 

Air conditioning system Ref. to WIRING SYSTEM (IMPREZA MODEL)> AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM>WIRING DIAGRAM . Ref. to WIRING SYSTEM (CROSSTREK MODEL (EXCEPT FOR HEV))> AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM>WIRING DIAGRAM .

CAUTION: Before performing diagnosis, refer to "CAUTION" in "General Description" Ref. to AIR CONDITIONER (DIAGNOSTICS) (EXCEPT FOR HEV)> GENERAL DESCRIPTION> CAUTION .
  1. CHECK A/C CONTROL PANEL  .
    1. Leave the vehicle under the condition at ambient temperature of 15°C (59°F) or more.
    2. Start the engine.
    3. Turn the fan dial to the maximum position.
    4. Press the A/C switch.

      Is A/C indicator displayed on the A/C control panel?

      Yes:  Go to  2.

      No:  Replace the A/C control panel Ref. to AIR CONDITIONER (EXCEPT FOR HEV)> CONTROL PANEL .

  2. CHECK VARIABLE FLOW CHANGE SOLENOID DUTY VALUE  .

    Using the Subaru Select Monitor, check the following items in the [Data Monitor] of [Air Conditioner] Ref. to AIR CONDITIONER (DIAGNOSTICS) (EXCEPT FOR HEV)> DATA MONITOR .

    • Variable Flow Change Solenoid Duty

    Does the display indicate the value greater than 0%?

    Yes:  Go to  7.

    No:  Go to  3.

  3. CHECK EVAPORATOR SENSOR  .

    Using the Subaru Select Monitor, check the following items in the [Data Monitor] of [Air Conditioner]. Ref. to AIR CONDITIONER (DIAGNOSTICS) (EXCEPT FOR HEV)> DATA MONITOR .

    • Evaporator Temperature

    Does the data indicate -0.5°C or more?

    Yes:  Go to  5.

    No:  Go to  4.

  4. CHECK EVAPORATOR SENSOR  .

    Check the evaporator sensor Ref. to AIR CONDITIONER (EXCEPT FOR HEV)> EVAPORATOR SENSOR .

    Is the check result OK?

    Yes:  Go to  5.

    No:  Replace the evaporator sensor. Ref. to AIR CONDITIONER (EXCEPT FOR HEV)> EVAPORATOR SENSOR .

  5. CHECK REFRIGERANT PRESSURE SENSOR  .

    Using the Subaru Select Monitor, check the following items in the [Data Monitor] of [Air Conditioner] Ref. to AIR CONDITIONER (DIAGNOSTICS) (EXCEPT FOR HEV)> DATA MONITOR .

    • Refrigerant Pressure

    Does the display indicate 0.23 - 2.81 MPa?

    Yes:  Go to  7.

    No:  Go to  6.

  6. CHECK AMOUNT OF REFRIGERANT PRESSURE  .

    Check the refrigerant pressure. Ref. to AIR CONDITIONER (EXCEPT FOR HEV)> REFRIGERANT PRESSURE WITH MANIFOLD GAUGE SET .

    Is the check result OK?

    Yes:  Go to  7.

    No:  Perform repair according to refrigerant pressure inspection.

  7. CHECK FLOW SENSOR CIRCUIT  .
    1. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    2. Wait at least 1 second.
    3. Read the DTC of [Air Conditioner] using the Subaru Select Monitor. Ref. to AIR CONDITIONER (DIAGNOSTICS) (EXCEPT FOR HEV)> DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) .

    Is DTC B14A5 or B14A6 displayed? (Current malfunction)

    Yes:  Perform the diagnosis for the displayed DTC B14A5 or B14A6. Ref. to AIR CONDITIONER (DIAGNOSTICS) (EXCEPT FOR HEV)> DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE WITH DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC)>DTC B14A5: REFRIGERANT FLOW SENSOR CIRCUIT OPEN . Ref. to AIR CONDITIONER (DIAGNOSTICS) (EXCEPT FOR HEV)> DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE WITH DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC)>DTC B14A6: REFRIGERANT FLOW SENSOR CIRCUIT SHORT-CIRCUIT .

    No:  Go to  8.

  8. CHECK VARIABLE SOLENOID CIRCUIT  .
    1. Start the engine.
    2. Turn the A/C switch to ON.
    3. Turn the fan dial to the maximum position.
    4. Set the temperature control dial to MAX COOL (both dials for the models equipped with left/right independent air conditioning function) and wait for 30 seconds or more.
    5. Read the DTC of [Air Conditioner] using the Subaru Select Monitor. Ref. to AIR CONDITIONER (DIAGNOSTICS) (EXCEPT FOR HEV)> DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) .

      Is PTC B14A7 displayed? (Current malfunction)

      Yes:  Perform the diagnosis for the displayed PTC B14A7.

      No:  Replace the compressor Ref. to AIR CONDITIONER (EXCEPT FOR HEV)> COMPRESSOR .
