Manual Transmission Assembly: Removal

  1. Disconnect the ground terminal from 12V engine restart battery sensor. Refer to REPAIR CONTENTS>REPAIR CONTENTS>NOTE>BATTERY .
  2. Remove the clip from the air intake boot, and loosen the clamp.

  3. Remove the air intake boot, and place it aside so that it does not interfere with the work.
    CAUTION: Be careful not to pull out the PCV hose.

  4. Remove the coupling harness.

  5. Remove the clips and remove the air breather hose.

  6. Disconnect the transmission radio ground cord terminal.

  7. Remove the engine hanger rear.

  8. Remove the operating cylinder and suspend on a wire.

  9. Remove the pitching stopper.

  10. Disconnect the engine ground terminal.
  11. Remove the engine harness stay and MT docking connector together as a unit.

  12. Set the ST1 and ST2.

    Preparation tool: 

    ST1: ENGINE SUPPORT BRACKET (41099AA012)

    ST2: ENGINE SUPPORT (41099AA020)

  13. Remove the bolts which hold upper side of transmission to engine.

  14. Remove the starter. Refer to STARTING/CHARGING SYSTEMS (H4DO (EXCEPT FOR HEV))>STARTER>REMOVAL .
  15. Loosen the self-locking nut of the strut mount by three turns.

  16. Remove the front tires. Refer to WHEEL AND TIRE SYSTEM>TIRE AND WHEEL>REMOVAL .
  17. Lift up the vehicle.
  18. Remove the crossmember support - rear.

  19. Remove the front exhaust pipe. Refer to EXHAUST (H4DO (EXCEPT FOR HEV))>FRONT EXHAUST PIPE>REMOVAL .
  20. Remove the rear exhaust pipe. Refer to EXHAUST (H4DO (EXCEPT FOR HEV))>REAR EXHAUST PIPE>REMOVAL .
  21. Drain transmission gear oil completely. Refer to MANUAL TRANSMISSION AND DIFFERENTIAL (5MT)>TRANSMISSION GEAR OIL>REPLACEMENT .
  22. Remove the center exhaust cover.

  23. Remove the hanger bracket.

  24. Remove the propeller shaft. Refer to DRIVE SHAFT SYSTEM>PROPELLER SHAFT>REMOVAL .
  25. Remove the gear shift rod and stay.
    1. Remove the stay.

  26. Disconnect the stabilizer link.

  27. Remove the nuts at 3 places, and separate the front arm from the ball joint.
    NOTE:
    • To prevent damage of the front arm ball joint boot, place a wooden block, etc. between front arm and ball joint.
    • Mark the engaging position of the ball joint and front arm assembly before loosening the flange nuts. Doing so will facilitate aligning the position when assembling and lessen adjusting allowance for wheel alignment.

  28. Using a crowbar, separate the front drive shaft.

  29. Remove the bolts and nuts which hold lower side of transmission to engine.

  30. Set the transmission jack.
    CAUTION: Always support the transmission case with a transmission jack.

  31. Remove the front crossmember and the rear crossmember.

  32. While lowering the transmission jack, tighten the turnbuckle of the ST (ENGINE SUPPORT), and incline the engine unit rearward.
  33. Remove the transmission assembly.
    CAUTION: Move the transmission jack towards the rear until the main shaft is withdrawn from the clutch cover.
  34. Remove the transmission cushion rubber.
  35. Remove the release bearing & lever. Refer to CLUTCH SYSTEM>Release Bearing and Lever>REMOVAL .
