Rear Drive Shaft: Removal

Shift the select lever or gear shift lever to neutral.
Release the parking brake.
Using the Subaru Select Monitor, go to the brake maintenance mode according to the display screen. Ref. to PARKING BRAKE>PARKING BRAKE SYSTEM>OPERATION>BRAKE MAINTENANCE MODE . (Crosstrek hybrid model)
Disconnect the ground terminal from 12V engine restart battery sensor. Ref. to REPAIR CONTENTS>REPAIR CONTENTS>NOTE>BATTERY .
NOTE: For the hybrid model, disconnect the battery negative terminal.
Remove the rear wheels. Ref. to WHEEL AND TIRE SYSTEM>TIRE AND WHEEL>REMOVAL .
Remove the axle nut.
CAUTION: Do not loosen the axle nut while the rear axle is loaded. Doing so may damage the rear hub unit bearing.
1. Lift the crimped section of axle nut.
2. Remove the axle nut using a socket wrench while depressing the brake pedal.

Remove the rear differential. Ref. to DIFFERENTIALS>REAR DIFFERENTIAL (VA-TYPE)>REMOVAL .
Remove the rear drive shaft from the rear axle housing.
NOTE:
- If it is hard to remove, use ST1 and ST2.
- When using the ST1 and ST2, remove the rear disc rotor. Ref. to BRAKE>REAR DISC ROTOR>REMOVAL .
