Rear Drive Shaft: Installation

NOTE: When the rear drive shaft is removed using the ST, install the rear disc rotor. Ref. to BRAKE>REAR DISC ROTOR .
  1. Insert the rear drive shaft into the hub spline, and pull it into the specified position.
    CAUTION:
    • Do not hammer the rear drive shaft when installing it.
    • Be careful not to damage the spline portion of the rear drive shaft.
    • Be careful not to damage the magnetic encoder.
  2. Tighten the axle nut temporarily.
    CAUTION: Be sure to use a new axle nut.
  3. Install the rear differential. Ref. to DIFFERENTIALS>REAR DIFFERENTIAL (VA-TYPE)>INSTALLATION .
  4. While depressing the brake pedal, tighten the axle nut.
    CAUTION: Do not load the rear axle before tightening the axle nut. Doing so may damage the rear hub unit bearing.

    Tightening torque: 

    Impreza model: 

    240 N.m (24.5 kgf-m, 177 ft-lb)

    Crosstrek model: 

    190 N.m (19.4 kgf-m, 140.1 ft-lb)

  5. Crimp the axle nut.

  6. Connect the ground terminal to 12V engine restart battery sensor. Ref. to REPAIR CONTENTS>REPAIR CONTENTS>NOTE>BATTERY .
    NOTE: For the hybrid model, connect the battery negative terminal.
  7. Using the Subaru Select Monitor, exit the brake maintenance mode according to the display screen. Ref. to PARKING BRAKE>PARKING BRAKE SYSTEM>OPERATION>BRAKE MAINTENANCE MODE . (Crosstrek hybrid model)
  8. After the operation is completed, apply and release the parking brake five times and ensure that the brake operates normally. (Crosstrek hybrid model)
  9. Install the rear wheels.

    Tightening torque: 

    120 N.m (12.2 kgf-m, 88.5 ft-lb)

  10. Perform reinitialization of the auto headlight beam leveler system. (MT model) Ref. to LIGHTING SYSTEM>AUTO HEADLIGHT BEAM LEVELER SYSTEM>PROCEDURE .
