Removal & Installation: Installation
- Align mark on crankshaft sprocket with mark on oil pump cover at cylinder block. See Figure.
- Align single mark on right hand exhaust camshaft sprocket with notch on belt cover.
- Align single mark on right hand intake camshaft sprocket with notch on belt cover. Ensure double line marks on intake and exhaust camshaft sprockets are aligned.
- Align single line mark "A" on left hand exhaust camshaft sprocket with notch "B" on belt cover by turning sprocket counterclockwise (as viewed from front of engine). See Fig 1.
- Align single line mark "A" on left hand intake camshaft sprocket with notch "B" on belt cover by turning sprocket clockwise (as viewed from front of engine). Ensure double line marks "C" on intake and exhaust camshaft sprockets are aligned. See Fig 2.
- Install automatic belt tension adjuster assembly into vertical pressing tool. Slowly apply 66 lbs. (30 kg) pressure to adjuster rod (taking more than 3 minutes) until hole in adjuster rod is aligned with hole in cylinder. See Fig 3.
- Use a 0.08" (2.0 mm) diameter stopper pin or hex wrench, and insert it through stopper pin hole in cylinder and adjuster rod to secure adjuster rod. See Fig 3.
- Install automatic belt tension adjuster assembly on engine with stopper pin in place. Install idler pulleys. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Ensure crankshaft and camshaft timing marks are still aligned. See Figure and Fig 4 . Install timing belt on sprockets in alphabetical order shown in figure. See Fig 4. Ensure installation marks align with crankshaft and camshaft sprockets. Count number of teeth between crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprockets so that belt will be installed in same position. See Fig 4. If reusing old belt, ensure direction of belt rotation arrow is correct and installation marks are aligned with crankshaft and camshaft sprockets.
- Install timing belt idler pulleys (if removed). Ensure timing marks are aligned. Remove stopper pin from automatic timing belt tensioner assembly. On manual transmission models, install timing belt guides over crankshaft pulley and at corners by camshaft pulleys. See Figure. Adjust clearance between all belt guides and timing belt to .020-.058" (.5-1.5 mm).
- Install timing belt covers. Clean crankshaft pulley bolt and bolt hole. Install crankshaft pulley. Coat crankshaft pulley bolt threads with engine oil. Install crankshaft pulley bolt. Hold crankshaft pulley stationary using Crank Pulley Wrench (499977400), and tighten bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install accessory drive belts. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Adjust drive belts to proper tension.
CAUTION:
To prevent damage, DO NOT apply more than 2205 lbs. (1000 kg) to automatic adjuster rod. DO NOT press automatic adjuster rod past top surface of housing. Always use a vertical type press to move adjuster rod down.
CAUTION:
Do not release pressure on adjuster rod until stopper pin is completely inserted.
CAUTION:
If tightening angle of crankshaft pulley bolt is less than 45 degrees (Impreza) or 65 degrees (all other models), bolt is damaged. Bolt must be replaced.
