ABS Warning Light

NOTE: When driving with an insufficient battery voltage, such as when the engine is jump started, the ABS warning light may come on. This is due to low battery voltage and does not indicate a malfunction. Once the battery is fully charged the light will go out. See Figure for lamp location.

When a fault occurs in the signal transmission system (or the ABSCM), the ABS warning light in the combination meter activates. At the same time, the current to the hydraulic control unit is interrupted. The brake system then functions in the same manner as a system without ABS. The warning light utilizes a dual circuit design. If the warning light comes on, one or more trouble codes should be stored in the control module. They must be identified using the warning light's code indicating function.

NORMAL OPERATION - The ABS warning light glows when the ignition switch is turned to the ON position then shuts off after about two seconds. This indicates that the ABS system is working properly. Consider the system normal if the warning light functions as follows:

Turns on right after the engine is started but goes out immediately and remains off.
Remains on after the engine has been started but goes out when the vehicle speed reaches about 8 mph (12 km/h).
Turns on while driving then goes out immediately and remains off.

ABNORMAL OPERATION - The ABS system may not be functioning properly if the warning light does the following:

Remains unlit when ignition switch is turned to the ON position.
Remains on after the engine has started and stays on even when the vehicle's speed exceeds about 8 mph (12 km/h)
Comes on while driving
