Check Engine Warning Light/Malfunction Indicator Lamp

If CHECK ENGINE light glows steadily or blinks while the engine is running, this may indicate a problem or potential problem somewhere in the emission control system. See Figure for lamp location. Continued vehicle operation without having the emission control system checked and repaired as necessary could cause serious damage, which may not be covered by the vehicle's warranty.

1. Steady Light  - If the light steadily glows while driving, or does not go out after engine has started, an emission control system malfunction has been detected. Ask customer if he has recently refueled the vehicle; the cause of the CHECK ENGINE lamp activating could simply be a loose or missing fuel filler cap. Remove the cap, make sure nothing is interfering with it sealing properly, then retighten it until it clicks. Tightening the cap will not immediately deactivate the CHECK ENGINE warning light; it may take several driving trips. If the light does not go out, inspect further.
2. Blinking Light  - If the CHECK ENGINE light blinks while driving, an engine misfire has been detected, which may damage the emission control system. To prevent serious damage to the emission control system, reduce vehicle speed; avoid hard acceleration; avoid steep uphill grades; reduce the amount of cargo, if possible; and stop towing a trailer as soon as possible. The CHECK ENGINE warning light may stop blinking but come on steadily after several driving trips. Inspect further.
