Ignition Switch
WARNING:
Never turn the ignition switch to LOCK while driving or towing the vehicle. It will lock the steering wheel and prevent steering control. Also, with the engine off, it is harder to steer than usual.
NOTE:
The ignition switch will sound a warning if the driver's door is opened while the key is still in the LOCK or ACC position.
The ignition switch has four positions: LOCK, ACC, ON and START. See Fig 1 .
The key can only be inserted or removed in this position. The ignition switch will lock the steering wheel when you remove the key. If turning the key is difficult, turn the steering wheel slightly to the right and left as you turn the key.
LOCK
- Automatic Transmission - The key can be turned from ACC to LOCK only when the selector lever is in the P position.
- Manual Transmission - The key can be turned from ACC to LOCK only when the key is pushed in while turning it. See Fig 1
ACC - In this position the electrical accessories (radio, accessory power socket, etc.) can be used.
ON - This is the normal operating position after the engine is started.
CAUTION:
Do not turn the ignition switch to the START position while the engine is running.
START
- KEY REMINDER CHIME - The reminder chime sounds when the driver's door opens and the ignition key is in the LOCK or ACC position. The chime stops when the key is removed from the ignition switch.
- IGNITION SWITCH LIGHT - To easily access the ignition switch while in the dark, the ignition switch light activates if any door (or rear gate on wagons) is opened. The light remains on for several seconds then gradually dims after all doors (and rear gate, if equipped) are closed, or if the key is inserted in the ignition switch. - KEY INTERLOCK RELEASE (A/T MODELS) - If the key cannot be turned to the LOCK position, even when the selector lever is in the P position, then remove the cover located under the steering column with a Phillips screwdriver (one is provided in tool bag). Turn ignition key while pressing the key interlock release lever. See Fig 2 .
