Combination Meter: Speedometer

Description  - The speedometer system uses electric signals from either the vehicle speed sensor in M/T models or from the transmission control module (TCM) in A/Tmodels. Since the speedometer system does not use mechanical components, such as a rotating cable, no opportunities exist for such problems as meter needle vibration, cable disconnection, and mechanical noise transmission. The odometer and trip meter readings appear on a liquid crystal display (LCD) within the speedometer gauge. See Fig 1 .

NOTE: Signals from the vehicle speed sensor or TCM are also used by the engine control module, automatic transmission control module, etc.

Operation

  1. M/T Model  - A vehicle speed sensor (VSS) is installed on M/T models. The VSS sends vehicle speed signals to the speedometer drive circuit and to the odometer/trip meter drive circuit, located in the speedometer. For more information on the VSS, see VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR
  2. A/T Model  - The TCM sends vehicle speed signals (four pulses per rotation of output shaft) to the speedometer drive circuit and to the odometer/trip meter drive circuit in the speedometer.
