DTC P1520: Radiator Fan Relay No. 1 Circuit High Input - Forester, IMPREZA, Legacy & Outback 2.5L M/T & Outback Sport

  1. Perform basic diagnostic procedure. See BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE . Turn ignition off. Connect test mode connector. See Figure and Figure . Turn ignition on. While using scan tool to command radiator fan relay on and off, use DVOM connected to ground to backprobe ECM connector B134 (35-pin connector) terminal No. 3. See Figure. If voltage changes between zero and 10 volts when radiator fan relay is commanded on and off, system has returned to normal. Check for intermittent open in wiring or poor terminal contact in ECM connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If voltage does not change between zero and 10 volts when radiator fan relay is commanded on and off, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Remove main fan relay and sub fan relay (if equipped with A/C). Disconnect test mode connector. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM connected to ground, backprobe ECM connector B134 (35-pin connector) terminal No. 3. If voltage is more than 10 volts, locate and repair short to voltage in radiator fan relay control circuit. After repair, replace ECM. If voltage is not more than 10 volts, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Remove main fan relay. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between main fan relay terminals No. 1 and No. 3. See Fig 1. If resistance is less than one ohm, replace main fan relay and ECM. If resistance is not less than one ohm, go to next step.

  4. If vehicle is not equipped with A/C, go to next step. On vehicles equipped with A/C, remove sub fan relay. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between sub fan relay terminals No. 1 and No. 3. See Fig 1. If resistance is less than one ohm, replace sub fan relay and ECM. If resistance is not less than one ohm, go to next step.
  5. Check for poor terminal contact in ECM connector. Repair as necessary. If terminal contact is okay, replace ECM. Clear memory and perform verification procedure. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  and VERIFICATION PROCEDURE  .
