DTC P1480: Cooling Fan Relay No. 1 Circuit High Input - Legacy & Outback 2.5L A/T

  1. Perform basic diagnostic procedure. See BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE . Turn ignition off. Connect test mode connector. See Figure and Figure . Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, command radiator fan relay on and off. Using a DVOM connected to ground, backprobe ECM connector B134 (35-pin connector) terminal No. 3 while commanding cooling fan relay on and off. See Figure. If voltage does not change between zero and 10 volts while commanding cooling fan relay on and off, go to next step. If voltage changes between zero and 10 volts while commanding cooling fan relay on and off, circuit has returned to normal condition. Repair poor terminal contact at ECM connector.
  2. Turn ignition off. Remove main fan relay. Remove sub fan relay if vehicle is equipped with A/C. Disconnect test mode connector. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM connected to ground, backprobe ECM connector B134 (35-pin connector) terminal No. 3. If voltage is more than 10 volts, locate and repair short to voltage in radiator fan relay control circuit. After repair, replace ECM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If voltage is not more than 10 volts, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Remove main fan relay. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between main fan relay terminals No. 1 and No. 3. If resistance is less than one ohm, replace main fan relay and ECM. If resistance is not less than one ohm, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition off. Remove sub fan relay. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between sub fan relay terminals No. 1 and No. 3. If resistance is less than one ohm, replace sub fan relay and ECM. If resistance is not less than one ohm, go to next step.
  5. Check for poor contact in ECM connector. Repair as necessary. If connector is okay, replace ECM. Clear memory and perform verification procedure. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  and VERIFICATION PROCEDURE  .
