DTC P1420: Fuel Tank Pressure Control Solenoid Valve Circuit High Input

  1. Perform basic diagnostic procedure. See BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE . Turn ignition off. Connect test mode connector. See Figure and Figure . Turn ignition on. While using scan tool to command fuel tank pressure control solenoid valve on and off, use DVOM connected to ground to backprobe ECM connector B134 (35-pin connector) terminal No. 1. See Figure. If voltage switches between zero and 10 volts when solenoid is commanded on and off, go to next step. If voltage does not switch between zero and 10 volts when solenoid is commanded on and off, circuit has returned to normal. Repair poor terminal contact in ECM connector.
  2. Using DVOM connected to ground, measure voltage at ECM connector B134 (35-pin connector) terminal No. 1. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to step  4. If voltage is not more than 10 volts, go to next step.
  3. Check for poor terminal contact in ECM connector. Repair ECM connector as necessary. If ECM connector is okay, replace ECM.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect fuel tank pressure control solenoid valve connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ECM connector B134 (35-pin connector) terminal No. 1 and chassis ground. If voltage is more than 10 volts, locate and repair short to voltage in wiring between ECM and fuel tank pressure control solenoid valve. After repair, replace ECM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If voltage is not more than 10 volts, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance across both terminals of fuel tank pressure control solenoid valve. If resistance is less than one ohm, replace fuel tank pressure control solenoid valve and ECM. If resistance is not less than one ohm, go to next step.
  6. Check for poor terminal contact in ECM connector. Repair ECM connector as required. If ECM connector is okay, replace ECM. Clear memory and perform verification procedure. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  and VERIFICATION PROCEDURE  .
