DTC P1121: Neutral Position Switch Circuit High Input (M/T) - Forester, IMPREZA, Legacy & Outback 2.5L M/T & Outback Sport

  1. Perform basic diagnostic procedure. See BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE . Turn ignition on. Using DVOM connected to ground, backprobe ECM connector B135 (28-pin connector) terminal No. 26 with transaxle in Neutral. See Figure. If voltage is more than 10 volts with transaxle in Neutral, go to next step. If voltage is not more than 10 volts with transaxle in Neutral, go to step  4.
  2. Using DVOM connected to ground, backprobe ECM connector B135 (28-pin connector) terminal No. 26 with transaxle in all other gear positions other than Neutral. If voltage is less than one volt in all gear positions other than Neutral, go to next step. If voltage is not less than one volt in all gear positions other than Neutral, go to step  5.
  3. Check for poor terminal contact in ECM connector B135 (28-pin connector). Repair connector as required. If connector is okay, contact authorized Subaru dealership because probable cause is deterioration of multiple parts.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect in-line 2-pin neutral position switch connector in transaxle harness between transaxle and ECM. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between terminals of neutral position switch-side of in-line 2-pin neutral position switch connector. If resistance is less than one ohm in all gear positions other than Neutral, go to next step. If resistance is not less than one ohm in all gear positions other than Neutral, locate and repair open circuit in transaxle harness. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If harness is okay, replace neutral position switch.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM connector B135 (28-pin connector). Measure resistance between ECM connector B135 (28-pin connector) terminal No. 26 and ECM-side of in-line 2-pin neutral position switch connector terminal No. 1. See Figure and Figure . If resistance is less than one ohm, go to next step. If resistance is not less than one ohm, locate and repair open circuit in wiring between ECM and transaxle harness.
  6. Measure resistance between ground and ECM-side of in-line 2-pin neutral position switch connector terminal No. 2. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not less than 5 ohms, locate and repair open circuit in wiring and check for poor terminal contact in connectors between ground and transaxle harness.
  7. Check for poor connection in transaxle harness connector. Repair connector as needed. If transaxle harness connector is okay, contact authorized Subaru dealership because probable cause is deterioration of multiple parts. Clear memory and perform verification procedure.
