DTC P0456: EVAP System Malfunction - Legacy & Outback 2.5L A/T

  1. Perform basic diagnostic procedure. See BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE . If any other DTCs are set, diagnose and repair those DTCs first. If DTC P0456 is only DTC set, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Check fuel filler cap for tightness. Tighten or replace as necessary and go to next step.
  3. Check for damaged or broken seal between fuel filler cap and fuel filler pipe. Replace fuel filler cap and/or filler pipe as necessary. If seal is okay, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition off. Connect test mode connector under left side of dash. See Figure and Figure . Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, activate drain valve and listen for clicking sound as valve is turned on and off. If clicking sound is heard while commanding drain valve on and off, go to next step. If clicking sound is not heard while commanding drain valve on and off, replace drain valve.
  5. Using scan tool, activate purge control solenoid valve and listen for clicking sound as valve is turned on and off. If clicking sound is heard while commanding purge control solenoid valve on and off, go to next step. If clicking sound is not heard while commanding purge control solenoid valve on and off, replace purge control solenoid valve.
  6. Using scan tool, activate pressure control solenoid valve and listen for clicking sound as valve is turned on and off. If clicking sound is heard while commanding pressure control solenoid valve on and off, go to next step. If clicking sound is not heard while commanding pressure control solenoid valve on and off, replace pressure control solenoid valve.
  7. Turn ignition off. Disconnect test mode connector under left side of dash. Check for any leaks, holes larger than .02" (0.5 mm), damage, or clogs in fuel lines, fuel tank, evaporative canister and evaporative system hoses. Repair or replace defective component as necessary. If there is no damage found, contact authorized Subaru dealership because probable cause is deterioration of multiple parts. Clear memory and perform verification procedure.
