DTC P1540: Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Malfunction 2 - Forester, IMPREZA 2.5L & Legacy & Outback 2.5L A/T

If vehicle is equipped with manual transaxle, go to next step. If vehicle is equipped with automatic transaxle, perform basic diagnostic procedure. See BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE . If DTC P0720 is present, diagnose and repair DTC P0720 first. If DTC P1540 is only DTC set, go to next step.
Check speedometer operation. If speedometer operation is normal, go to next step. If speedometer operation is abnormal, check speedometer and VSS. Repair or replace parts as necessary.
Turn ignition off. Disconnect 18-pin instrument cluster connector (30-pin on Legacy and Outback 2.5L A/T). Using an ohmmeter, backprobe between ECM connector B135 (28-pin connector) terminal No. 24 and instrument cluster connector terminal No. 7 on Forester, No. 10 on Impreza 2.5L or No. 13 on Legacy and Outback 2.5L A/T. See Figure, Figure and Figure . If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair poor terminal contact in ECM connector. If resistance is not less than 10 ohms, locate and repair open circuit in wiring and check for poor terminal contact in connectors between ECM and instrument cluster. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Clear memory and perform verification procedure. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES and VERIFICATION PROCEDURE .
