Removal & Installation: Camshafts: Removal

  1. Remove timing belt and camshaft sprockets. See TIMING BELT . Remove rocker arm assembly. See ROCKER ARM ASSEMBLY . Using dial indicator, measure camshaft thrust clearance. If thrust clearance is not within specifications, camshaft support must be replaced. See CAMSHAFT  table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  2. Remove crankshaft pulley. Remove crankshaft sprocket. Remove left-hand camshaft position sensor support. Remove oil level dipstick tube. Remove camshaft support bolt Nos. 1 and 2. See Fig 1. Equally loosen and remove bolt Nos. 3-10 in order. Using a Torx socket, remove bolt Nos. 11-16 in order. Remove camshaft support cap, camshaft, oil seal (if necessary) and camshaft plug.
