Removal & Installation: Camshafts: Inspection

  1. Visually inspect camshaft for scratches, damage and wear. Place front and rear camshaft journals on "V" blocks. Using a dial indicator, measure camshaft runout at center journal. If runout is not within specification, replace camshaft. See CAMSHAFT .
  2. Using an outside micrometer, measure journal diameter and lobe height. Replace camshaft if measurements are not within specification. See CAMSHAFT  table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. Visually inspect camshaft support cap for scratches, damage and wear. Check camshaft plug for damage and replace as necessary.
  3. Using an outside micrometer, measure and note outside diameter of camshaft journals. Using an inside micrometer, measure and note inside diameter of camshaft journals of cylinder head and camshaft support cap. Using the 2 measurements, determine camshaft journal oil clearance. See CAMSHAFT  table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. If oil clearance exceeds specification, replace camshaft. If necessary, replace camshaft support cap and cylinder head as a set.
