Crankshaft & Main Bearings

  1. Using Red lead inspect crankshaft for cracks. Using "V" blocks and a dial indicator, measure crankshaft runout at center journal. Using an outside micrometer, measure out-of-round and taper at each journal. See CRANKSHAFT, MAIN & CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS  table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. Grind crankshaft and replace bearing if out-of-round or taper exceeds specification.
  2. Install main bearing inserts in cylinder block. Install crankshaft in left side of cylinder block. Using a feeler gauge, measure crankshaft end play at center journal. Replace center bearing if end play exceeds specified service limit.
  3. Measure main bearing oil clearance at each bearing journal using Plastigage. Install right side to left side cylinder block. See CRANKSHAFT, MAIN & CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS  table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. Grind crankshaft and replace bearings if oil clearance exceeds service limit.
