Cylinder Head: Removal

  1. Remove timing belt. See TIMING BELT . Remove intake manifold. See INTAKE MANIFOLD . Remove crankshaft pulley. Remove camshafts. See CAMSHAFTS .
  2. Remove A/C compressor bracket-to-cylinder head bolt. Disconnect all electrical connectors, fuel lines and vacuum hoses interfering with cylinder head removal. Remove valve covers.
  3. Loosen and remove cylinder head bolts in sequence. See Fig 1. Using a plastic mallet, tap cylinder head to separate it from cylinder block. Remove bolts No. 1 and 3 and remove cylinder head. Remove and discard cylinder head gasket.
    CAUTION: Leave cylinder head bolts No. 1 and 3 engaged by 3 or 4 threads to prevent cylinder head from falling.
