DTC P1101: Neutral Position Switch Circuit Low Input (M/T) - Forester, IMPREZA, Legacy & Outback 2.5L M/T & Outback Sport

  1. Perform basic diagnostic procedure. See BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE . Turn ignition on. Using DVOM connected to ground, backprobe ECM connector B135 (28-pin connector) terminal No. 26. See Figure. Observe voltage with transaxle in Neutral. If voltage is more than 10 volts with transaxle in Neutral, go to next step. If voltage is not more than 10 volts with transaxle in Neutral, go to step  4.
  2. Move transaxle shifter to any gear other than Neutral. Using DVOM connected to ground, backprobe ECM connector B135 (28-pin connector) terminal No. 26. If voltage is less than one volt with transaxle in any gear other than Neutral, go to next step. If voltage is not less than one volt with transaxle in any gear other than Neutral, go to step  4.
  3. Check for poor terminal contact in ECM connector B135 (28-pin connector). Repair as necessary. If connector is okay, contact authorized Subaru dealership because probable cause is deterioration of multiple parts.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect in-line 2-pin connector in transaxle harness between transaxle and ECM. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance across both terminals of transaxle-side of connector. If resistance is more than 1 megohm with transaxle in Neutral, go to next step. If resistance is not more than one megohm with transaxle in Neutral, locate and repair short in transaxle harness between connector and transaxle. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If no short is present, replace neutral position switch.
  5. Measure resistance between ground and ECM connector B135 (28-pin connector) terminal No. 26. If resistance is not less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, locate and repair short to ground in wiring between ECM connector B135 (28-pin connector) and transaxle harness connector.
  6. Check for poor terminal contact in transaxle harness connector. Repair connector as necessary. If connector is okay, contact authorized Subaru dealership because probable cause is deterioration of multiple parts. Clear memory and perform verification procedure.
