DTC P0038: Rear Ho2S Heater Circuit High Output - Legacy & Outback 2.5L A/T

  1. Perform basic diagnostic procedure. See BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE . Using a DVOM connected to ground, backprobe ECM connector B134 (35-pin connector) terminal No. 21. See Figure. If voltage is more than 8 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not more than 8 volts, go to step  3.
  2. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, observe rear HO2S heater current value. If current draw is more than 7 amps, replace ECM. If current draw is not more than 7 amps, system has returned to normal. Check for poor terminal contact in connectors.
  3. Check for poor terminal contact in connectors between ECM and rear HO2S. If poor contact is not located, system has returned to normal. Check for intermittent conditions. Clear memory and perform verification procedure. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  and VERIFICATION PROCEDURE  .
