Air Bag Warning Light Stays On

NOTE: Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . After repairs are complete, check AIR BAG warning light to verify system is functioning correctly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
  1. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Remove left lower trim panel from dash. Check for poor connection at connectors AB1 and B31. See Figure. If there is poor contact in double lock of connectors AB1 and B31, repair as necessary. If there is good contact in double lock of connectors AB1 and B31, go to next step.
  2. Ensure ignition is off. Connect body harness connector B31 to test harness "A" (98299PA00), connector 1A. See Figure. Connect negative battery cable and turn ignition on (with engine off). Connect test harness "A", connectors 3A and 4A together. If AIR BAG warning light is on, go to next step. If AIR BAG warning light is off, go to step  4.
    NOTE: When problem has been corrected, disconnect connectors 3A and 4A.
  3. Disconnect negative battery terminal. Turn ignition off and wait 20 seconds. Inspect body wiring harness (including light circuit). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If problems are found, repair as necessary. Go to step  9. If no problems are found, replace AIR BAG warning light bulb and-or instrument cluster printed circuit board. Go to step  9.
  4. Disconnect negative battery terminal. Turn ignition off and wait 20 seconds. Disconnect and inspect air bag control module connector AB6. See Figure. If problems are found, repair as necessary and go to step  9. If no problems are found, go to next step.
  5. Remove test harness "A" and ensure connectors AB1 and B31 are connected. Disconnect lower clockspring connectors AB3 and AB8. See Figure. Disconnect passenger side air bag module connectors AB9 and AB10. Disconnect air bag control module connector AB6. Connect connector AB6 to test harness "I2" (98299FC041), connector 1I. See Figure Connect negative battery cable and turn ignition switch on. Connect test harness "I2", connectors 4I and 5I together. If AIR BAG warning light goes off after about 7 seconds and remains off for more than 30 seconds, go to next step. If AIR BAG warning light comes on, replace air bag main wiring harness and go to step  9.
    NOTE: When problem has been corrected, disconnect connectors 4I and 5I.
  6. Turn ignition off and disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least 20 seconds. Disconnect connector AB1 from body wiring harness connector B31. See Figure. Connector is located behind driver-side kick panel. Connect connector B31 to test harness "A", connector 1A. See Figure. Measure resistance between ground and test harness "A", connector 5A, terminal No. 17. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 ohms or more, repair body grounding circuit and go to step  9.
  7. Measure resistance between ground and test harness "A", connector 5A, terminal No. 18. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 ohms or more, repair body ground circuit and go to step  9.
  8. Remove test harness "A" and reconnect connector AB1 to body wiring harness connector B31. See Figure. Disconnect air bag control module connector AB6. Connect connector AB6 to test harness "I2", connector 1I. See Figure. Measure resistance between ground and test harness "I2", connector 2I, terminal No. 9. If resistance is 10 ohms or more, replace air bag main wiring harness and go to step  9. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, replace air bag control module and go to next step. See CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  9. Turn ignition off and disconnect negative battery terminal. Reconnect system components and activate air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Clear air bag system codes. See CLEARING CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. Check for normal air bag system operation. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
