Timing Belt: Inspection

  1. Inspect timing belt for wear or cracks. Inspect belt for signs of oil contamination. Replace belt if damaged or oil contaminated.
  2. Inspect tension adjuster for leaking oil seals. Inspect belt tension adjust rod end for wear or damage. Inspect belt tensioner pulley for grease leakage and smooth rotation. Inspect idler pulleys for smooth rotation. Replace components as necessary.
  3. Measure adjuster rod protrusion from body. Protrusion should be .204-.244" (5.2-6.2 mm). If protrusion is not within specification, replace automatic belt tension adjuster.
  4. Ensure adjuster rod movement is stiff. Using a press, slowly apply 66 lbs. (30 kg) of force to push adjuster rod down. If adjuster rod is not stiff and moves freely, slowly push rod down until rod end is level with top of cylinder, and repeat procedure 3 times. If adjuster rod movement is still not stiff and moves down freely, replace adjuster assembly.
    NOTE: Stiff movement of adjuster rod requires more than 3 minutes to push rod down applying 66 lbs. (30 kg) of force.
    CAUTION: Push adjuster rod vertically, DO NOT use a lateral type vise. Always use a vertical type press when pushing adjuster rod down.
