Removal - 1999 Models
- Release fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE . Drain engine coolant into suitable container. Remove accessory drive belt cover and belts. Remove generator and A/C compressor (if equipped) with brackets. Disconnect spark plug wires. Remove connector bracket attaching bolt. Remove camshaft position sensor and support. Disconnect oil pressure switch connector and PCV hose.
- Remove intake manifold. See INTAKE MANIFOLD . Remove timing belt, idlers and camshaft sprockets. See TIMING BELT . Remove left oil level gauge guide attaching bolt, and oil level gauge guide. Remove valve cover.
- Remove cylinder head bolts in sequence. See Fig 1. While tapping cylinder head with a plastic hammer, separate it from cylinder block. Remove bolts No. 1 and 3 to remove cylinder head. Remove cylinder head gasket. DO NOT scratch mating surface of cylinder head and cylinder block.
CAUTION:
Leave bolts No. 1 and 3 engaged by 3 or 4 threads to prevent cylinder head from falling.
