Diagnostic Procedure (Forester & Impreza)
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect transaxle 20-pin connector T4. Using DVOM, measure resistance between transaxle connector T4 terminal No. 16 and ground. See Figure . If resistance is less than one ohm, go to next step. If resistance is one ohm or more, repair open in harness between transaxle connector and transfer duty solenoid ground.
- Using DVOM, measure resistance between transaxle connector T4 terminal No. 6 and ground. If resistance is 10-17 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 10-17 ohms, go to step 10 .
- Disconnect TCM 24-pin connector B54. Using DVOM, measure resistance between TCM harness connector B54 terminal No. 15 and transaxle harness connector B11 terminal No. 6. See Figure and Figure . If resistance is less than one ohm, go to next step. If resistance is one ohm or more, repair open in harness between TCM and transaxle connector.
- Using DVOM, measure resistance between TCM harness connector B54 terminal No. 15 and ground. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is one megohm or less, repair short to ground in harness between TCM and transaxle connector.
- If Subaru Select Monitor is available, go to step 8 . If Subaru Select Monitor is not available, go to next step.
- Reconnect TCM and transaxle connectors. Turn ignition switch to ON position (engine off). Place selector lever in "P" position. Using DVOM, measure voltage by backprobing between TCM harness connector B54 terminal No. 15 and ground with throttle fully closed. If voltage is less than one volt, go to next step. If voltage is one volt or more, go to step 12 .
- Ensure ignition switch is in ON position. Place selector lever in "D" position. Using DVOM, measure voltage between TCM harness connector B54 terminal No. 15 and ground. If voltage is 5-7 volts and AT OIL TEMP indicator illuminates, concern is intermittent and circuit has returned to normal condition. A temporary poor contact in connector or harness may be cause. Repair TCM harness or connector. If voltage is not 5-7 volts, go to step 12 .
- Reconnect TCM and transaxle connectors. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Turn Subaru Select Monitor on. Using Subaru Select Monitor, monitor transfer duty solenoid data with throttle fully open. Place selector lever in "D" position. If transfer duty solenoid value is 5-10 percent, go to next step. If transfer duty solenoid value is not 5-10 percent, go to step 12 .
- With throttle fully closed, set FWD mode. If transfer duty solenoid value is 95 percent and AT OIL TEMP indicator illuminates, concern is intermittent and circuit has returned to normal condition. A temporary poor contact in connector or harness may be cause. Repair harness to, or connector in TCM or transfer duty solenoid connector. If transfer duty solenoid value is not 95 percent, go to 12 .
- Raise vehicle on hoist and support with safety stands. Drain transaxle fluid when cool. Remove extension case and disconnect connector from transfer duty solenoid. Using DVOM, measure resistance between transfer duty solenoid connector terminal No. 1 and ground. If resistance is 10-17 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 10-17 ohms, replace transfer duty solenoid.
- Using DVOM, measure resistance between transaxle connector T4 terminal No. 6 and transfer duty solenoid harness connector terminal No. 1 (Brown wire). If resistance is less than one ohm, go to next step. If resistance is one ohm or more, repair open in transaxle internal harness between transaxle connector T4 and transfer duty solenoid.
- Check for poor contact in transfer duty solenoid circuit. If contact is poor, repair as necessary. If contact is okay, replace TCM and retest.
