DTC P1540: Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Malfunction 2 - Except 2.2L & Legacy 2.5L M/T
- If vehicle is equipped with manual transaxle, go to next step. If vehicle is equipped with automatic transaxle, turn ignition off and connect scan tool. Retrieve DTCs. If DTC P0720 is present, diagnose DTC P0720 first. If DTC P1540 is only DTC set, go to next step.
- Check speedometer operation. If speedometer operation is normal, go to next step. If speedometer operation is abnormal, check speedometer and VSS. Repair or replace parts as necessary.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster connector (13-pin connector on Forester, 18-pin connector on Impreza, 30-pin connector on Legacy 2.5L A/T). Using an ohmmeter, backprobe ECM connector B135 (28-pin connector) terminal No. 24 and connect other ohmmeter lead to instrument cluster connector terminal No. 11 (No. 10 on Impreza, No. 13 on Legacy). See Figure, Figure, Figure and Figure . If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair poor contact in ECM connector. If resistance is 10 ohms or more, repair open circuit between ECM and instrument cluster or poor contact in connectors between ECM and instrument cluster. See appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
