Valve Clearance Adjustment

  1. Disconnect battery cables. Remove battery and battery carrier. Remove engine coolant reservoir tank. Remove left timing belt cover.
  2. On 1999 models, disconnect mass airflow sensor connector. Loosen air intake duct-to-air intake chamber clamp. Remove air cleaner upper cover clips. Remove air intake duct and air cleaner upper cover as an assembly. Remove air cleaner element and lower case. On 2000 models, remove air intake duct as an assembly. Remove resonator chamber.
  3. On all models, disconnect front and rear (if equipped) window washer motor connectors. Disconnect rear washer hose from rear washer motor and plug hose with cap (if equipped). Remove washer tank mounting bolts and wire tank away from work area. Disconnect spark plug wires from spark plugs. Disconnect PCV hoses from valve covers.
  4. Raise and support vehicle. Remove right and left undercovers. Place suitable container under vehicle. Lower vehicle. Remove right timing belt cover bolt. Remove valve cover bolts, and valve covers. Rotate crankshaft clockwise to set No. 1 cylinder at TDC of compression stroke. Arrow mark on left camshaft sprocket should be pointing up. See Fig 1.

  5. Raise vehicle. Using feeler gauge, measure and record valve clearance on cylinder No. 1. Adjust as necessary. Tighten lock nut to 80-97 INCH lbs. (9-11 N.m). See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS  table.

  6. Lower vehicle, and rotate crankshaft 180 degrees clockwise so next cylinder in firing order is at TDC. See Fig 1. Raise vehicle, and check/adjust valve clearance for that cylinder. Repeat procedure until all valve clearances have been recorded. After adjustment, install components in reverse order of removal.
