Removal & Installation: Camshafts: Inspection

  1. Visually inspect camshaft for scratches, flaking and wear. Place front and rear camshaft journals on "V" blocks. Measure camshaft runout at center journal.
  2. Measure journal diameter and lobe height. Replace camshaft if measurements are not within specification. See CAMSHAFT  table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. Visually inspect camshaft support for scratches, flaking and wear. Check camshaft plugs for damage and replace as necessary.
  3. Using Plastigage, measure camshaft journal oil clearance. See CAMSHAFT  table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. If oil clearance exceeds specification, replace camshaft. If necessary, replace camshaft support and cylinder head as a set.
