Timing Belt: Installation
- Using a vertical press, slowly push rod into tensioner adjuster body with pressure of 66 lbs. (30 kg) until holes in belt tensioner adjuster rod and adjuster body are aligned. This should take more than 3 minutes to accomplish. When holes are aligned, install a 0.08" (2 mm) diameter stopper pin into holes in adjuster body and rod. See Fig 1.
- Install belt tensioner adjuster with stopper pin in place, and temporarily tighten mounting bolt. Install belt idler No. 1. See Figure. Ensure crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprocket alignment marks are still aligned. See Figure.
- Install timing belt, being careful not to move sprockets. Ensure rotation direction of belt is correct, that all alignment marks are aligned, and number of teeth between alignment points is correct when belt is installed. See Figure.
- Install belt idlers No. 3 and No. 2. Once all marks are aligned and idlers are installed, remove stopper pin from tensioner adjuster. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts/nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . On models with manual transaxle, adjust clearance between timing belt guide and timing belt to .020-.059" (0.5-1.5 mm). After proper installation of timing belt, remove rocker covers and ensure valve lash adjuster does not contain air.
CAUTION:
DO NOT allow press pressure to exceed 2205 lbs. (992 kg). DO NOT release pressure until stopper pin is completely installed.
