DTC P1540: Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Malfunction 2 - Except IMPREZA & Legacy 2.2L (CALIFORNIA Emissions)
- If vehicle is equipped with M/T, go to next step. If vehicle is equipped with A/T and DTC P0720 exists, diagnose DTC P0720 first. If DTC P1540 is only DTC set, go to next step.
- Check speedometer operation. If speedometer operation is normal, on A/T, go to next step. If speedometer operation is normal on M/T, go to step 4. If speedometer operation is abnormal, check power supply and ground circuit to instrument cluster and connector between instrument cluster and VSS. Repair or replace parts as necessary.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect TCM connector. Turn ignition on. Using voltmeter connected to ground, backprobe ECM connector B135 terminal No. 24. If voltage is more than 2 volts, check for an open in wiring between ECM and instrument cluster connectors, or for poor contact at instrument cluster or ECM connectors. If voltage is 2 volts or less, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect appropriate ECM connector. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between ground and ECM connector B135 terminal No. 24. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair short to ground in wiring between ECM and instrument cluster connectors. If resistance is 10 ohms or more, repair poor contact at ECM.
