Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS): Forester
- Disconnect VSS No. 2 and instrument cluster harness connectors. VSS is located on top front of transmission. Check resistance between VSS No. 2 harness connector terminal No. 1 and instrument cluster harness connector terminal No. 10. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not less than 10 ohms, repair or replace harness between instrument cluster and VSS.
- Check resistance between VSS harness connector terminal No. 2 and instrument cluster harness connector terminal No. 9. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not less than 10 ohms, repair or replace harness between instrument cluster and VSS.
- Check resistance between VSS terminals No. 1 and 2. If resistance is 350-450 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 350-450 ohms, replace VSS No. 2.
- Raise and support vehicle. Operate vehicle at speed greater than 12 MPH. Set DVOM on AC scale. Check voltage at VSS terminals No. 1 and 2. If voltage reading is greater than 5 volts AC, repair or replace speedometer. If voltage reading is not greater than 5 volts AC, replace VSS No. 2.
