DTC P0301 (CYL1), DTC P0302 (CYL2), DTC P0303 (CYL3), DTC P0304 (CYL4), DTC P0305 (CYL5), DTC P0306 (INJ6): Cylinder Misfire Detected

  1. 1) Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM connector. Connect SSM. Retrieve DTC(s). If DTC P0100 , P0101, P0115, P0125, P0201, P0202, P0203, P0204, P0205, P0206, or P1300 exist, diagnose affected DTC(s). DO NOT  diagnose misfire DTC. If no other DTCs exist, go to next step.
  2. 2) Turn ignition off. Set SSM to function mode F42 to read minimum EGR system pressure value and note for future use. Turn ignition on. Record any displayed values. Clear ECM memory using SSM. Start engine and drive vehicle for more than 10 minutes. If MIL illuminates or flashes, go to step 4). If MIL does not illuminate, go to next step.
  3. 3) Determine if vehicle has run out of fuel in the recent past. If vehicle has run out of fuel, engine has no abnormality, finish diagnostics operation. If vehicle has not been empty of fuel, check for abnormalities in ignition system. Repair as necessary. If ignition system is okay, finish diagnostics operation.
  4. 4) Inspect air intake system for air leaks or air suction caused by loose or missing nuts or bolts, or cracks or loose connection of any hoses in system and repair as necessary. If no leaks are found, go to next step.
    NOTE: A break in step numbering sequence occurs at this point. Procedure skips from step 4) to step 7). No test procedures have been omitted.
  5. 7) Turn ignition off. Remove ignition coil from suspect cylinder(s). Install test spark plug in coil and ground spark plug body. Disconnect fuel pump relay. Crank engine and check for spark. If spark exists at suspect cylinder, go to step 12). If spark does not exist, go to next step.
  6. 8) Turn ignition off. Disconnect suspect cylinder coil connector. Turn ignition on. Check voltage between connector terminal No. 1 and ground. If voltage reading is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage reading is 10 volts or less, repair wiring or connectors.
  7. 9) Check resistance between ignition coil terminal No. 1 and No. 2. If resistance is not .45-1.05 ohms, replace coil. If resistance is .45-1.05 ohms, check coil connector for poor contact. Repair as needed. If coil connector is okay, turn ignition off. Disconnect coil connector from any unaffected cylinder. Connect suspect coil to unaffected coil connector. Crank engine and check for spark. If spark exists, replace ignition coil. If spark does not exist, go to next step.
  8. 10) Turn ignition off. Disconnect ignitor connector B11. Check resistance between ignitor connector B11 and affected cylinder ignition coil connector terminal No. 2. See IGNITOR CONNECTOR B11 TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION table. If resistance is less than 1 ohm, go to next step. If resistance is 1 ohm or more, repair connector or wiring.

  9. 11) Disconnect ECM connector. Disconnect ignitor connector B12. Check wiring harness resistance between ECM connector and ignitor connector B12. See IGNITOR CONNECTOR B12 TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION table. If resistance is less than 1 ohm, go to next step. If resistance is 1 ohm or more, repair connector or wiring.

  10. 12) Check resistance between ECM connector terminal No. 94 and ignitor connector B12 terminal No. 4. If resistance is less than 1 ohm, go to next step. If resistance is 1 ohm or more, repair connector or wiring.
  11. 13) Check resistance between ignitor connector B12 terminals in IGNITOR CONNECTOR B12 TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION  table and ground. If resistance is less than 1 megohm at any terminal, repair short in wiring. If resistance is 1 megohm or more at all terminals, replace ignitor.
  12. 14) Refer to minimum EGR pressure value (function mode F42) noted in step 2). If EGR pressure is less than one kPa, clean EGR valve. Ensure valve operates smoothly and valve seat area is completely clean. Replace EGR valve if required. If EGR pressure value is more than one kPa, diagnose using DTC P0170  and retest.
