1997-98 Legacy

  1. Check operation of speedometer. If speedometer operates correctly, go to next step. If speedometer does not work correctly, see appropriate SPEEDOMETER TEST  under COMPONENT TESTS.
  2. Raise vehicle and secure with safety stand. Ensure all wheels are off floor. Disconnect connector from vehicle speed sensor No. 2. Measure resistance between vehicle speed sensor connector terminals. Resistance between vehicle speed sensor connector terminals No. 1 and No. 2 should be 350-450 ohms. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, replace vehicle speed sensor No. 2.
  3. Measure resistance between vehicle speed sensor connector terminal and ground. Resistance between vehicle speed sensor connector terminal No. 1 and ground should be more than 100 k/ohms. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, replace vehicle speed sensor No. 2.
  4. Measure resistance between vehicle speed sensor connector terminal and ground. Resistance between vehicle speed sensor connector terminal No. 2 and ground should be more than 100 k/ohms. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, replace vehicle speed sensor No. 2.
  5. CAUTION: During following diagnostic procedure, use caution working around moving wheels.
    NOTE: All wheels must be off ground to perform following test. Speed difference between front and rear wheels during this step may cause ABS light to illuminate, but this does not indicate a malfunction. When A/T diagnosis is complete, perform ABS memory clearance procedure.
  6. Start engine and set vehicle speed at 12 MPH (20 KM/H). Measure AC voltage between vehicle speed sensor No. 2 connector terminals. Voltage between vehicle speed sensor No. 2 connector terminals No. 1 and No. 2 should be more than 2 AC volts. If voltage is okay, go to next step. If voltage is not within specification, replace vehicle speed sensor No. 2.
  7. NOTE: All wheels must be off ground to perform following test. Speed difference between front and rear wheels during this step may cause ABS light to illuminate, but this does not indicate a malfunction. When A/T diagnosis is complete, perform ABS memory clearance procedure.
  8. Set vehicle speed at 6 MPH (10 KM/H). Backprobe and measure voltage between TCM connectors B55 and B56. Voltage between connector B55 terminal No. 10 and B56 terminal No. 11 should be a pulse from less than 1.0 to more than 9 volts. If voltage pulse is okay and AT OIL TEMP light illuminates, concern is intermittent and circuit has returned to normal condition. A temporary poor contact of connector or harness may be cause. Repair TCM harness or connector. If voltage is not within specification, go to step  9.
  9. Turn ignition switch to OFF position, remove speedometer. Disconnect connectors from TCM and speedometer. Measure resistance between TCM connector B56 and speedometer connector i10. Resistance between connector B56 terminal No. 11 and connector i10 terminal No. 10 should be less than 1.0 ohm. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, repair open in harness between, or poor connection at TCM and speedometer.
  10. Measure resistance between speedometer connector i10 and ground. Resistance between connector i10 terminal No. 10 and ground should be more than 100 k/ohms. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, repair short to ground in harness between TCM and speedometer.
  11. Check for poor contact in vehicle speed sensor No. 2 circuit. If contact is poor, repair as necessary. If contact is okay, replace TCM and retest.
